Can You Crack It? That Overlooked Dutch Creation Which Shaped the Modern Globe
There are many candidates to claim the designation as “world’s greatest invention.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.
According to a new book, however, that title should go to the automated timber mill invented through Dutchman Cornelis Corneliszoon in 1593.
“Before mechanised cutting, constructing a simple merchant vessel required approximately 10 sawyers laboring over 90 days,” writes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-driven lumber mills, an identical quantity of processed timber could be produced in less than seven days.”
Owing to their speedy mechanical saw, which converted logs into boards using almost no human effort, the Dutch were able to build ships more quickly compared to anyone else, an advantage that unleashed a century of Dutch naval, economic as well as cultural dominance across Europe and the world.
The First True Industrial Device
Corneliszoon’s sawmill, argues Dávila, represented “humanity’s initial true factory machine.” A windmill rotated a wheel. One component transformed its rotary motion into vertical action for the cutting blade. Another component transformed that same rotary motion into a lateral movement advancing the log toward the blade. A geared mechanism moved the wood ahead one precise increment per stroke.
“Every component seemed modest on its own. The Dutchman’s genius lay in how to integrate these parts in order that the machine operated in a precisely synchronized sequence, sawing with each descending motion while advancing on every upward motion. It was an astonishingly clever application of basic parts.”
