Users Discontinuing Slimming Jabs Put On Pounds Four Times Faster Than People Using Diet and Exercise
Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who come off new slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy can put back on reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who stop traditional diet and exercise plans.
Findings released in a leading medical journal demonstrates that while overweight people often shed about a fifth of their body weight while undergoing treatment, the weight comes back at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.
"People purchasing these medications need to be cognizant of the danger of fast weight regain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.
This pace of regain means a return to pre-treatment weight within about one and a half years.
Weighing Treatments
The study, which examined 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of participants, compared the effects of the injectable medications with conventional dieting.
The team point out that individuals who shed pounds through dieting usually have a slower creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—post-intervention.
The Reason for the Rapid Rebound
Nutrition scientists propose the way of the drugs explains the accelerated weight return.
GLP-1 drugs mimic a natural hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1, which moderates feelings of fullness.
"Artificially providing the hormone concentrations far above than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and may also diminish responsiveness to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics specialist.
"Stopping of this GLP-1 'fix' results in hunger is uncontrolled, making overeating much more probable."
A Chronic Issue?
The NHS suggest the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, accompanied by prescribed diet and exercise modifications.
A number of clinicians contend that, given the significant potential of weight regain, the therapy is often life-long.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who say that the results "emphasize the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing diseases like hypertension.
User Experiences
Users who have stopped the medication report a intense resurgence of appetite.
"I experienced something flipping and I was suddenly starving," said an individual.
This challenge is compounded if individuals have not adopted permanent dietary or behavioural modifications during treatment.
Widespread Interest
Survey data indicate that millions of adults in the UK have used these injections in the last 12 months, with demand continuing to grow.
- Use is higher among women compared to males.
- The middle-aged demographic shows the highest level of interest.
- Many access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.
Finally, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are potent agents for weight loss, they are not a magic fix and maintained weight loss likely depends on combined lifestyle support.
