What's Inside that Case Henry Opens in Stranger Things?
During the bulk of the fifth and final season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories built from the recollections of the villain Henry. The search for an escape route in episode 6 forces them to relive a traumatic incident from Henry's youth—an event that may just hold the key to defeating him once and for all.
Spoiler Warning: The following contains major spoilers for *Stranger Things* season 5, volume 2.
The Discovery in the Tunnel
When she finds Max in the psychic realm dubbed Camazotz, Holly discovers she is sheltering in a grotto that Henry strangely fears. An accidental discovery a viewing device pilfered from Henry's old home helps Holly understand that the source of fear lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view to the cut-out, she and Max tumble into a deep mine shaft.
They watch a young, eight-year-old Henry come across an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man panics and shoots, hitting him in the hand. To protect himself, Henry kills the man with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly wonders aloud. Essentially, yes, but the event wasn't just a simple act of survival.
In keeping with mysteries of the final season, the truth about the events in the tunnel originates in the theatrical production Stranger Things: The First Shadow.
A Naval Mystery and Stolen Research
The play reveals the 1943 event, which allegedly sent a vessel into a realm known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the ship's commander, who returned in a catatonic condition with an altered blood type.
That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, attempted to recreate this dimensional breach in the Nevada desert. However, a treacherous employee pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Russian agents, who were eager to begin their version of the tests. That traitor in the cavern is that employee.
So, What's in the Case?
Based on what is known about his research, the case most likely held samples of Captain Brenner's infected blood. In the scene, Henry is bleeding from his hand. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, which triggered the origin of his telekinetic gifts—abilities he would inadvertently transfer to the kids under Brenner's care.
A second theory, the container could have held strange particles that later made its way to the secret facility, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that the boy somehow wound up in the Abyss, coming back 12 hours later with a new blood type and personality. From then on, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, much like how Will Byers was controlled by the shadow monster in season 2.
A Weaponized Emotion
His lasting fear linked to that memory shows how utterly horrifying the incident was for him. Even as he controls the collective consciousness and seeks to merge the Abyss into Hawkins, a fragment of his psyche remains. The villain weaponizes terror, and the show is setting up a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has confronted his personal demons to fortify himself.
Will's growth has neutralized a key tactic of Vecna. Furthermore, Will now understands what his enemy truly fears, which could provide a key upper hand in the series finale ahead.
